The more things change, the more they seem to remain the same said one wag. For a certainty that is not the case if planning your vacation getaway to Savannah’s famed historic district this coming spring high season in 2007. History loving tourism has never been more popular in the USA and the twin cities of Charleston and Savannah continues to be the antebellum era destination cities of choice for so many discerning travelers with the largest number of pre-booking reservations in our eight year history already made.
Upon your arrival to Savannah next spring, you will find General James Oglethorpe still looks south from his statue in Chippewa Square, facing the Spanish threat he turned back in 1742.
This exact same square also has a far more recent claim to fame with the movie makers from Tinsel town - it was the site of "Forrest Gump's" bench, an Academy Award-winning film that was largely filmed in Savannah. So was the Civil War epic "Glory" and, of course, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." As many of our returning guests may recall, General Oglethorpe also laid out the city plan, organizing it into the very European arrangement of squares. Today 19 of the 24 original squares stand in their restored glory with more to follow and ongoing tweaking on other squares. These celebrated historic icons make Savannah the distinctly beautiful historic city that she has become.
And Savannah is indeed beautiful. The Hostess City is blessed with ancient oak trees dripping with spanish moss, their long limbs straining to block out the scorching midday sun. Our many architectural wonders accented with cobblestones straight off the ships that, long ago, sailed into Savannah's port create a fascinating ambience. Our blooming azaleas in springtime and horse-drawn carriages
to guide visitors around the Historic District are truly a laid back sight to behold. So join the burgeoning number of returning visitors and first timers that are laying our their spring vacation for next year, and make your travel plans early.
