Bring the family to watch the Pyrates invade Beaufort, North Carolina

The Beaufort Pyrate Invasion in North Carolina is scheduled for August 8th and 9th. There will be sword fighting, cannon fire and much more. There will be demonstrations and reenactments as well as live entertainment. According to the official website:

The Fish Fry on Friday night, August 8, at the Beaufort Historic Site will be catered by Roland's and costs $15 per person. There will be a cash bar for beer, wine and water. It all starts at 6 PM. Connie Mason and Fish Town Chanters will be playing and singing!! Capt. Sinbad and his crew of wenches and the "Brethren of the Coast" will be there so be on your best behavior!!! AND…don't forget to wear your pyrate garb!! The Buccaneer's Ball on Saturday night, August 9, is a ticketed event. In costume...$25 per person. NOT in costume...$30 per person.(Don't even think about buying a $25 ticket before the event and then not wearing a costume...Capt. Sinbad will be making you walk the plank for sure!! )

The Ball starts at 7 PM and goes until 10 PM. TICKETS ARE LIMITED because space in the NC Maritime Museum building, 315 Front Street, is limited so don't wait 'til the last minute. Many restaurants have graciously donated great munchies and there also be a cash bar and music!

Free Summer Concerts in Savannah's Squares

This summer the City of Savannah will enjoy the Summer Concerts in the Squares. The Department of Cultural Affairs sponsors the series and the official website states:

The City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs will be presenting a series of free live concerts in City squares throughout the summer. Sixteen concerts are planned from June 4 through August 1. Concerts will be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11:30 a.m. and will alternate between Johnson and Wright Squares.

The concert series is being produced by New Arts Ensembles (NAE), a Savannah-based group that showcases some of the region’s finest musicians. “This is a great opportunity for both musicians and audience members to share great music without the formality of a performance hall,” said NAE founder and director Richardo Ochoa. “It is also a great summer activity for families. The musicians involved love to perform for children, which is something that they don’t often get the opportunity to do in an evening performance.”

There will be a variety of artists performing mostly jazz and blues including David Duckworth Trio, Claire Frazier, Bottles and Cans and Silver Lining.

The Buddy Holly Story comes to Hilton Head Island

Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story is set to kick off June 17th at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina in the heart of Hilton Head Island. The show will run through July 27th, 2008. The Arts Center of Coastal Carolina website states:

Celebrate the life, the legend, the music of one of the great rockers of all time. Buddy Holly skyrocketed to stardom in the late ‘50s with hits like “That’ll Be the Day,” “Peggy Sue” and “Oh Boy.” But the phenomenal career of this charismatic singer/songwriter, known for his horned-rimmed glasses and vocal hiccup, ended on Feb. 3, 1959, when the plane he and fellow rockers Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper were flying in crashed. Touted as the world’s most successful rock musical, you don’t know what you’ve been a-missin’ til you see this rockin’ jukebox show. Oh boy!

Making News: Savannah Style Premiere on TV Guide Channel

Last night I watched the premiere episode of a show called “Making News: Savannah Style” on the TV Guide Channel. I had read about the show and thought it would be interesting to watch…and it was.

The show centers on a local news station in Savannah that has gone through many different owners and on-air staff and desperately seeks stability.  We are introduced to the charming employees of WJCL/Fox 28 (both an ABC and Fox affiliate) and the less than desirable conditions in which they must work. The first episode featured a Smithfield protest at Paula Deen’s Lady and Sons Restaurant.

Most of the cast of this reality show yearn for larger markets, Savannah just a stop on their way to bigger and better things. Here’s hoping they stick around for a while on what is sure to be an entertaining show.
