Memorial Day Weekend on the River!

Okay, so we are mostly sold out of our roster of highly affordable upscale townhouse digs, this long  Memorial Day weekend already. But listen up for next year! The official kick off of summer in Destination Savannah every Memorial Day is always a busy time to be in coastal Georgia. River Street on the Savannah River has it going on every year. Check it out for this season in our calendar of coastal Georgia events. 

And if it isn’t happening on River Street, how about heading across the Savannah River out to Hilton Head Island to catch the Tony Award Winning Elton John/Tim Rice collaboration of the hit musical, Aida! Or if all else fails, sit back and enjoy the fireworks displays, the tours, and the art shows or better yet just hang out on the sunny beaches of Tybee or Daufuskie Island. Whatever you might be looking for, Low Country South Carolina and Georgia has it all right here waiting on you. 

By the way, don’t forget this Memorial Day Weekend is also Armed Forces Day all across America!

Savannah, by Land, by Air AND by Sea?

While Savannah keeps an eye out on Carnival Cruise Lines and their due to expire in 2011 agreement with Jacksonville, many southeastern residents are rooting for that scenario to become a reality. Quite a few Georgia & North and South Carolina residents would love to shave a few more hours off of their drive time to Destination Savannah over Destination Jacksonville. Plus have the added attractions of Historic Savannah AND the beaches ofTybee Island, Daufuskie Island, and Hilton Head Island as a value added getaway option once they arrive. 

As this possibility continues to pick up a head of steam with the Carnival Cruise Ship Fascination. many Savannahians believe this is one of the possibilities that could move to the Hostess City according to Georgia Public Broadcasting!

"Savannah Alderman Tony Thomas has been leading the push for the cruise ship industry in Savannah. "If Carnival is considering leaving Jacksonville, we would be very interested in Savannah in talking to them," Thomas says. "Maybe this is an opportunity for Savannah." If the Fascination left Jacksonville for Savannah, it would be the first major cruise ship to call on the Georgia coast. Savannah has been seeking to build a cruise ship industry in recent years."

Bicycling Savannah’s Landmark Historic District

Historic Savannah is not only a "Top Ten Walking City", but some of the best bicycling in an urban area can be found in our Hostess City. And this coming weekend features a three hour bicycling class in Forsyth Park from Noon to 3:00 PM on Saturday May 15th at the Bicycle Tent at The Farmers Market in Forsyth Park. May is National Bicycling Month.

May 15: Ride Savannah. 12-3pm, class will meet at the Savannah Bicycle Campaign tent at the Forsyth Park Farmer’s Market to begin class which also includes on-bike travel through Historic Downtown Savannah. This course is provided at no charge. Students who complete both Savannah Bicycle College and Ride Savannah will be eligible to receive the Traffic Skills 101 certificate, the prerequisite for LCI certification.

Gulf Oil Spill putting Coastal Georgia on Travelers Mind

Like many other Americans, we are hoping for the absolute best outcome for our beach vacation rental friends in the Gulf States. The threat to their rebounding Gulf hospitality industry livelihood from the ever widening oil spill is sobering. Not to mention that those that make a living in the gulf coast fisheries providing seafood to approximately half of the country is foremost on everybody’s mind in this new economy. A recent article in the Savannah Morning News tells of tourists coming out to Tybee Island in coastal Georgia rather than wait to see what is going to happen in the Gulf. 

Our phone has started ringing with folks that are looking to come to Savannah’s Historic District PLUS take in the beaches of Tybee Island for the first time. As recently as a few days ago we had guests that had reservations at Destin, Gulf Shores, and Gulfport checking out availability and townhouse rates in Savannah in the event they have to cancel their reservations in the Gulf. For those guests, the good news is that we do have some 2 and 3 night rates available at low season rates in the summer months, all situated within the landmark historic district just 20 minutes away from Tybee Island and their high summer season vacation rentals. We are personally hoping that things work out for the best and folks get to visit both Coastal Georgia AND the Gulf Coast, this summer season.
