Get you Mojo on at the month long MOJA Festival

Charleston myths, architectural structure and color, art and music are heavily influenced by the Caribbean culture first introduced to the area hundreds of years ago. These traditions have continued to show their presence over the centuries and are recognized annually at the MOJA Festival. The Swahili term ‘moja’ means ‘one’. Moja is the perfect description for this event, which recognizes the many contributions of African-American and Caribbean culture in the Lowcountry. It’s one event that encompasses the visual arts, music, dance, poetry, narratives, theatre, food and crafts that these cultures have influenced. 

The 2010 MOJA Festival is celebrating 27 years of tradition, and the events schedule is packed with education and exciting events. The Southeast Tourism Society has recognized the festival as one of the top 20 events to attend for the past several years. It will run from Thursday, September 23 to Sunday, October 23. Events are sponsored by the City of Charleston Cultural Affairs Office and will be held at various locations in the downtown area.

While some may see the festival as solely for entertainment,
the sponsoring committee is using it as an opportunity to educate participants about the cultures and to promote harmony amongst all cultures. Workshops will be held in public school and through senior outreach programs to educate.

Over half of the events will be free of charge, and the remaining at reasonable costs for any attendee (ranging from $5-$35). Some of the festival’s highlights include an art exhibition and reception, a theatre performance of “Blues for an Alabama Sky”, art and poetry exhibit “I-8-Tee,”
sweetgrass basket competition and exhibit, Caribbean Street Parade, Reggae block dance, Heritage Day, jazz artist Jonathan Butler and many more.

Coastal Ga. Seafood Festivals X 3 starting September 17th

Every fall high season about September, the seafood festivals up and down the Georgia Coast lays out the tastiest seafood spreads found any where. 

The Shrimp and Grits Festival kicks off out on Jekyll Island in honor of our celebrated lowcountry coastal cuisine in Coastal Georgia is up first the September 17th - 19. Staged in the Jekyll Island Historic District, the Shrimp & Grits Festival prepares our renowned Wild Georgia Shrimp fresh from our coastal waters as it was done back in the day. And the ambience amongst the live oaks features those highly sought after wild Georgia shrimp prepared by some of the area's top restaurants. 

Moving right along to the next weekend down the coast a smidgen, the St. Mary's Rock Shrimp Festival is holding it's 38th annual event, the grand daddy of all the fall seafood festivals. This one day event on Saturday, September 25th features a 5K & 10K distance run and live entertainment of all varieties. 

And finally the 12th annual Ogeechee Seafood Festival promises to be the best ever with our neighbor to the south, Richmond Hill one county away. This event, held every October 15th to the 17th, attracted 30,000 visitors last year. So arrive early and catch the live entertainment all day on the two stages.

Spyro Gyra to Headline Savannah Jazzfest in September

The 29th annual Savannah Jazz Festival will run for a week in Savannah's Landmark Historic District from September 19th through September 26th in many different venues throughout the downtown Savannah area. As usual, this popular event is free to the public and will feature many popular jazz groups performing in Forsyth Park the adjoining downtown area.

The Savannah Jazz Festival, is all about celebrating jazz as the ever changing living art form it has long been noted for. With all manner of musical history backing us up, Savannah's fall music festival will offer genres of jazz ranging from be bop, Dixieland, melodic standards, straight ahead, or your basic traditional swing with a smattering of down home blues. As usual, the City of Savannah puts on the one of America's best free jazz festivals boasting the best in international, national, regional and local jazz talent.
