There were no part timers involved in the vacation rental business to Destination Savannah Historic District back in the day when we first hung out the only RBO shingle in downtown Savannah. Even then we were providing excellent vacation rental value long before there was even a newly minted Goldman-Sachs/Wall Street backed Home Away website paying any real attention to vacation rentals. While there have been plenty of Johnny Come Lately vacation rental by owners (RBO's) offering lodging options in downtown Savannah on VRBO, Home Away, and VacationRentals.com travel directories each succeeding year since our inception, here are some of the pitfalls to avoid when it comes to making your own informed vacation rental reservation decision.

Just like savvy shoppers shop Savannah hotels, Savannah Historic Inns, and Savannah Bed and Breakfast lodging options in the historic district, apply the same principal here. To find that cheap vacation rental deal while realizing more bang for your travel bucks - read objective reviews. But not just any review. You should always read honest to goodness independent reviews from reputable companies known for their independently verified reviews such as Trip Advisor and Flip Key rather than those reviews that may have been manufactured by the property owners themselves on non-verified by owner vacation rental directories.

And make sure you always deal with a fully supported, legitimately sanctioned property management company of many years duration that has an actual verifiable track record. The nature of the online travel industry is one in which poor customer service on top of dingy vacation rental properties (they do work hand in hand) will always find the “vacation rental by amateur” home owners or under performing vacation rental management companies out by their 1 and 2 star reviews.

Savannah Harbor PGA Tour AND Lt. Dan Band!

Once again the annual Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament has been in town all week long since moving up the low country coast from St. Augustine back in 2004. On Sunday, the grand finale out on Hutchinson Island at The Club at Savannah Harbor will wind up the final day of the PGA sponsored Seniors Tournament. As an extra added treat, this year, the tournament is sponsoring another adopted "Savannah fixture", movie actor Gary Sinise who played the memorable role of Lt. Dan in the Forrest Gump Movie that was shot in Savannah's Historic District.

Gary Sinise will not be reprising his role this weekend but rather displaying his musical chops with his well traveled Lieutenant Dan Band. Beginning at 8:30 PM and again at 10:30 PM on Friday, April 22nd you can take in a night of musical entertainment in "the District." This outdoor concert will be free and open to the public in beautiful Forsyth Park. Our 30+ acre park is located in the downtown Historic district of Savannah.  You too can join the long list of fans that have featured bands like Mr. Sinise's that have played in this musically oriented venue over the years.

Since the band's inception back in 2004, band leaders Gary Sinise and Kimo Williams have performed in over 40 concerts each year. Most of the proceeds of these concerts (75% or so) specifically benefit the USO and other worthwhile charities that support our troops. The good news is this band has been recognized nationwide as a recent 2011 recipient of Beaufort's Santini Award for their dedication to supporting American troops through a recent released documentary film of their selfless work.  But their wide range of music is not only highly recognizable with such classics across a wide musical genre such as "Baba O'Reilly" "Purple Haze", "A Little Piece of my Heart", and "Play that Funky Music White Boy", it is very danceable as well!

Slow Food Market in Historic Savannah

Once again April is upon us and once again the Savannah Local Food Collaborative has kicked off their spring seasonal farmers market at the south end of Forsyth Park that will run through November. The Forsyth Park Farmers Market features a variety of farm fresh produce on a seasonal basis.

The market opens at 9 a.m. every Saturday and features regionally grown produce, fresh food and food products sold by vendors and producers from their booths. Both conventional growers and organic farmers offer a variety of produce including fresh fruits and vegetables, a fresh flower vendor and an edible plant vendor at the back of Forsyth Park between the basketball and tennis courts.

The Forsyth Farmers Market (map section 8) will provide a venue on healthier eating and local food security that are popular issues migrating into the healthier living sensibilities of travelers on the road that are already onboard with the growing Slow Food movement.  Savannah Getaways encourages our guests that emphasize eating locally grown organically produced foods in their own city’s of origin to “eat like a local” while on holiday in Savannah as our guests. By planning your menu around our big time Historic District Destination, take advantage of our locally grown Foody Resource offered in Forsyth Park. You never have to miss a beat with your dietary preferences.

For those of you that are looking to cook your own meals while staying in our upscale townhouses, you never even have to leave the Landmark District to find a convenient grocery store.  The two closet grocery stores, both within easy walking distance to ANY of our true historic district townhouse vacation rental homes are Kroger’s Grocery Store at 311 E. Gwinnett Street (map section 9) and Parker’s Urban Gourmet Market at 222 Drayton Street (map section 5).
